Special Religious Education (SRE)

Special Religious Education (SRE) is well established in NSW and it provides an important religious dimension in public schooling in NSW and now in the ACT.

ACT Islamic Education Services (ACTIES) is here to deliver Islamic religious education under the SRE in the ACT.

What is SRE?

Special Religious Education is provided to students in NSW public schools by authorised representatives of approved religious groups to students who have nominated that religion. These classes are commonly known as “scripture”.

In NSW, religious education is mandated by Section 32 of the Education Act 1990 (NSW), which gives approved religious authorities and those they authorise, permission to teach SRE to students in NSW public schools.

In the ACT, Section 29 of the Education Act 2004 (ACT) allows for parents of children at an ACT Public School to request that their child receive religious education in a particular religion. If such a request is received, there is a requirement that reasonable time within the school curriculum is allowed for the child to receive religious education in the requested religion. There are published policies and procedures which outline how the religious education is to be delivered.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), and its education arm Australian Islamic Education Services (AIES) and Islamic Council of NSW (ICNSW) have collaborated with ACTIES for the benefit of the broader Australian society in the provision of Islamic Religious Education (ISRE).

The mission of ANIC is to provide religious leadership, rulings and services to the Muslim community, and this includes oversight of Islamic scripture programs being delivered in the Australian Public-School sector.  https://islamiceducation.org.au/)

As a national peak body for the Islamic faith, AIES is the authorised body that approves the Islamic SRE Scripture content for Public Schools.
